Introduction

Eastern Europe is the region east of Central Europe, often including countries like Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Belarus, and the Balkan states depending on definition. It has a rich history shaped by empires, kingdoms, and diverse cultures, so you’ll find old towns, castles, churches, and traditional music and food. The landscape ranges from forests and mountains to rivers and coastlines. Many places have strong local traditions, affordable travel costs compared to Western Europe, and cities with beautiful architecture (both medieval and Soviet-era). Visitors can enjoy historical sites, lively markets, and regional cuisines while experiencing warm local hospitality. Travel is often easy by train or bus between nearby countries, though languages and customs vary, so a little local greeting goes a long way.

Today, Eastern Europe is a mix of old and new: growing cities with cafes, arts scenes, and startups sit alongside traditional villages. Many countries are improving infrastructure, making travel easier with trains, low-cost flights, and budget-friendly accommodation. Popular activities include exploring UNESCO heritage sites, tasting local dishes like borscht or kebapche, attending folk festivals, and enjoying nightlife in cities like Budapest, Kraków, or Sofia. While some areas still reflect the legacy of the Soviet era in architecture or public life, people are generally welcoming, and solo or budget travelers often find it safe with common-sense precautions. Learning a few basic phrases in the local language and carrying small cash for markets helps, since card acceptance can vary outside big cities.
